Cherry Bomb, released by The Runaways in 1976, sparked a change in Rock N’ Roll. The Runaways brought to traditional rock music a new, snotty attitude along with a sexy, young image.

The Runaways were an all female band formed in Los Angeles California. They have been said by some to have helped usher in punk music with their short and simple, catchy writing style and they certainly upheld the stereotypical punk rock attitude.
Drummer Sandy West and guitarist Joan Jett are the founding members of The Runaways. They brought in Lita Ford on guitar, Cherie Currie on vocals, as well as several bass players through out their short four year run.
Interest in The Runaways has peaked once again thanks to an upcoming movie entitled, imagine this, “The Runaways“! Featuring Kristen Stewart (Cherie Currie) and Dakota Fanning (Joan Jett), the movie depicts the two girls as they morph from rebellious So-Cal kids to Rock Stars with their ground breaking, all female, rock n roll band in the 1970’s. Written and directed by Floria Sigismondi.
Cherry Bomb has become something a liberating anthem for rebellious teenage women. It’s popularity has stayed steady over the years and Cherry Bomb has been covered by many bands, most recently by Scary Cherry and the Bang Bangs.
Scary Cherry and the Bang Bangs, a Dallas Texas based band featuring former Fem2Fem singer, Lezlie Deane, is another great example of a female fronted rock band with that rebellious, punk rock attitude.
